BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Following a 14-day layoff, WKU Softball suffered a 1-0 loss to
Eastern Kentucky in Wednesday’s midweek contest. Kelsey Aikey tied her career high
with 13 strikeouts in the complete-game loss. EKU improved to 22-9 on the season
while the Hilltoppers are now 15-5.
“With COVID, I think a lot of teams are going through this so obviously we didn’t
make the adjustments tonight but hopefully this will get us back in the swing of
things and we can get a little more consistent with playing games,” shared head
coach Amy Tudor.
A pitchers’ duel from beginning to end, the Hilltoppers struck for four hits
including two from Taylor Davis but would ultimately strand 11 runners on base.
Aikey (4-5) earned her 10th start of the season and turned in the sixth complete
game of her redshirt-senior campaign. She’s now tallied 13 strikeouts on five
occasions across her career while the mark set a season high.
“I think I’m just in a groove,” shared Aikey. “I kind of feed off my energy and we
played well on defense too which always helps. Kendall was awesome tonight behind
the plate so I definitely think I fed off of her to keep me in my energy. I feel
like whenever I get into a groove, I don’t think and whatever pitch is called, I
just throw it.”
Aikey now owns sole possession of third place on the WKU program career strikeouts
list with 522. She needs eight more to take over second place and is 31 strikeouts
shy of owning the record.
EKU would score its lone run off a Hilltopper throwing error, resulting in an
unearned run in the top of the seventh. WKU would be retired in order in the bottom
of the frame – the only inning the Tops did not strand a runner.
“What I think we need to focus on is that this weekend coming up we have three tough
games that we need to compete in,” added Aikey. “We’ll take a day off tomorrow and
then get right back into it on Friday.”
This coming, the Hilltoppers will head to Gainesville, Fla., for two outings against
No. 5 Florida and an exhibition game vs. Softball Canada.
